1973 Land Rover Series 3 88

This was my first Series Land Rover, a 1973 Series III 88. Prior to this truck I had owned a 1997 Defender 90 and a 2000 Discovery……….they were cool, but didn’t quite give the same feel as the Series truck. I bought this truck from Lanny Clark about ten years ago after being referred to Lanny by a mutual friend. I had gone to Lanny and asked that he let me know of any “decent” Series trucks that he might come across. It took me a couple of truck viewings with Lanny to finally land on this Series III, and realize that no matter what I bought for a Series truck, there was going to be some elbow grease involved in getting the truck up to snuff. I bought the truck from Lanny with collapsed springs, mismatched tires, a plywood and astro-turf center console, a fiberglass hood and Defender grill (previous owner liked the D90 look), a red front bumper, a recent paint job that looked to be an inch thick, and a beat up hard top. The good? A solid frame & bulkhead, good brakes, all of the electronics worked, the engine ran great, and the transmission shifted well (once a new shift lever was installed). So, I swapped the D90 hood and grill with Lanny for the correct Series parts, had Lanny install OME springs and shocks, I blasted and painted the rims Limestone (they had been sprayed gray), installed some Rovers North sliders, put on four new 235/85/16 Dunlop Mud Rovers, installed a new front bumper with military over riders, and gave the hard top back to Lanny for future consideration and installed a canvas top. Then……..I drove the wheels off the thing!
